Do’s and Don’ts of Taking Online Courses

The web offers a wide world of online education, but with all the benefits there are a fair number of pitfalls. Here are some things to do and not to do when taking online courses.

DO Proper Research on Classes

Not every web link leads to an accredited online school. Determine what your goals are and find the place where you can best meet your needs.

DON’T Overload Your Schedule

Start slow and determine what is a manageable number of classes. If you are currently working a full-time job, ensure you can meet the required time commitment and are willing to sacrifice free time to meet your obligations.

DO Participate in Online Classes

Online education isn’t like YouTube. You don’t just sit and watch; you join in. Take full advantage of the interaction with the teacher and other students. The more you interact with your professor, the more you’ll be perceived as an active participant in the learning process and not just another email address. Come grading time, participation may make all the difference.

DON’T Get Lazy

There is a perception that online classes are easier than traditional classes. This is hardly the case. Since you have the full power of the Internet at your fingertips, you’ll be expected to use it to impress your professor and the class.

DO Ask for Help

If there is something you don’t understand, a program or file you can’t access, or even help finding the correct website, ask for help. If you don’t speak up, no one’s going to know there’s a problem. It’s your education, take control.

Whether your goal is to get your bachelor degree or just gain a skill, remember these do’s and don’ts for online classes. Good Luck.
