Online learning seems to offer a clear path to a degree. An online university is chosen, a major is selected and classes soon begin. The process is deemed a success before the first assignment is even offered – with you certain that nothing could be better than this.

That certainty eventually withers, however, when you realize that pursuing a degree virtually isn’t so straightforward. There are instead advantages and disadvantages to balance:

Advantage: Convenience. The miles can become damning. Traveling between campuses, cubicles and living rooms is often too great a distance to conquer and many students spend too much time driving instead of learning. Online classes, however, boast convenience. All assignments are digital, which means instant access.

Disadvantage: Lack of Experience. Home is where the heart is. It’s not, however, where professors, books, research materials or fellow students reside. The unfortunate truth of online college classes is that they strip away practical experience. All applications are instead virtual and this can be confusing to some.

Advantage: Cost Efficiency. Dollars define traditional education – with high prices and higher debt accumulations left in the wake of knowledge. It’s a challenge to afford universities. Online venues, however, offer aid. These are often over 50 percent less expensive.

Disadvantage: Weakened Support. Studying from home offers an appealing isolation, with individuals certain they can finally study without the typical campus distractions. Some of those distractions are helpful, such as visits to instructors to ask for advice and fellow pupils to share study methods. All relief is found instead online; and this can cause delays or miscommunication.

Online courses aren’t guaranteed to succeed. They instead demand patience, time and genuine effort to compensate for their concerns. The efforts will be worthy only when this is done.
